Well almost the end of it, but "Happy New Year" to all our members. So what's new? well we've added a few pictures to the gallery page, and there will be a few more updates before the end of the month. The Dentonian page will start to change as we remove all the bits we don't need, this will start shortly, so if you want to download a back issue we suggest you do it now. The site has had very few visitors and this is partly because the old site hasn't "fallen off" the search engines, but the new site is now showing up in 50% of searches and this will only increase. While only 30 people have visited the site this month they came from London, Manchester, Stockport, Salford, Kidsgrove, Stalybridge and Brentwood. tamesidefamilyhistory.co.uk and tamesidehistoryforum.org.uk have updated their sites and we can see that people are visiting us from there, so thank you to both of them.

December 2009

A slightly late "Happy Christmas" to all the members of the society and those who visit the web page. As most people will hopefully be enjoying a few days off between now and 2009, it seemed as good a time as any to add some new Dentonians to the site. These are issues 51,54,56,57,58 and 59, you'll find them at the bottom of the Dentonian page,but as yet we have not added the contents of each one. While on the subject of the Dentonian we are going to be reviewing the contents of the back issues and leaving only the articles that will be of value, we doubt people will want to know what date memberships were due in 2005, this will free up a little space, help people find what the want more easily, and make it easier and more eco-friendly when printing them out, for "non commercial purposes" only of course. So if you do have a back issue missing and want to download one, we suggest you do that sooner rather than later.

Finally we wish all our members and families and very Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you in 2009.

Welcome to our new home "dentonlocalhistorysociety.co.uk" last month we found out the AOL (who hosted the site) were shutting down all its web pages and photo storage by the end of the year. After some research by our Webmaster Digital Red was recommended and after e-mail, a few days later we were back up and running. The photos will be re housed very soon on the free “Photobucket” site.

Now we have about 50 times more space to play with we hope to extend the site to include more back issues of the Dentonian and also include a few more pages which we never had space for before.

If you do have a link to the old site please delete it, save the new one and please tell anyone you know we have moved, if you run a web page with our old link on it, again please change it.We look forward to you re visiting our site and for your continued support. We would like to thank Digital Red for the support and help and re housing our site.

Here is a little more about Digital Red , who not only host our site but have also provided much help in getting some of the behind the web page stuff set up.

Digital Red specialises in web development and technical support for small businesses, homeworkers and individuals. It is based in Ruislip Manor in Middlesex – 15 miles north west of Central London with customers locally, throughout London, around the country and all over the world.

Digital Red is run by me, Daniel O’Neill. I have over 15 years’ experience in IT and 10 years’ experience of working with the Internet. I am a sole trader and have been working full-time in Internet Development and Technical Support since 1998.

I tend to work a lot less rigidly than most similar businesses in that I'm me and I'm real, not behind a switchboard or in a team of programmers. Everyone has my mobile number, I'm not averse to working evenings/weekends where necessary, and a laptop isn't usually left out of the packing when going on holiday!

I can offer you the continuity of support that you need and speak in plain English without buzzwords or jargon so that you will always go away not just with your problem solved, but also with some understanding of what the problem was (if you want to know, of course) so that you learn over time and may even be able to fix things yourself.

Events page updated till the end of the year.

Apoligies to you all for the lack of updates so far this year, a serious illness in the family has made it very difficult to find time to keep the webpage up to date and also to complete the "revamp". Things are a little more normal now and hopefully the final stage will be completed very shortly. All the information on the site will still be availabe but the odd page may look a little scruffy for a short time.

Almost there! 7 of the 8 pages are now complete with just the Gallery page to go, this might take a little while as all the pictures need to be sorted and re-posted to make the pages easy to navigate. You may remember the site had reached it's limit and therefore any additions would be impossible, now the site is a good 60% smaller which means additions can now be made. It's been tested on the Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers (which are the two most widely used) and works fine on both.

2 interesting links appeared while "surfing" this month:

1st up is http://www.dentonmills.com.au/ which 1st appeared in the Dentonian isuue 42 & 43 at the back end of 2002, this link contains many pictures of the mill plus a small history and background.

2nd is http://www.pittdixon.go-plus.net/denton-colliery/denton-colliery.htm which as the name suggests gives an interesting insite in to Denton Colliery. A quick search of the site also reveals some great pitures of old Denton. We hope you like them and also the new look site which is now very close to being completed.
